What is Alzheimer's disease?
Alzheimer's disease is a neuro-degenerative disease that destroys neurons in the brain and decreases cognitive and physical function. Alzheimer's disease forms as a result of amyloid protein build up in the brain. An overload of amyloid protein in the brain stems from an unhealthy diet, substance abuse, and an inactive lifestyle. Symptoms of the disease include memory loss, incapability of learning new things, mood swings, loss of appetite, and loss of sleep. Who is affected by Alzheimer's disease?
If one or more of your parents was affected by Alzheimer's disease, then there is a 50% chance that you can develop the disease. Patients can be diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease as early as the age of 45, and as late as the age of 65. If you think you are at risk for the disease, go get tested by your doctor if you are noticing problems with your memory or cognitive function!
